Australian Participation in the War Years

Kings Park has a high concentration of war memorials. Take a walk with a Kings Park Guide and discover their significance.

Kings Park plays a ceremonial role in the lives of Western Australians because of the high concentration of war memorials in the park. Take a walk with Kings Park Guides among some of these memorials and discover aspects of Australian participation in the war years.

During the walk you will hear tales of major battles of the Boer War and the role of the 10th Light Horse Regiment in Palestine in WWI. You will learn how the enthusiastic amateurs at Gallipoli became skilled warriors on the Western Front, led by General Sir John Monash, regarded by some as Australia’s greatest soldier. You will see the Kokoda Track memorial which commemorates the desperate battle, by untrained young conscripts in New Guinea, to defend Australia from the advancing Japanese Army. You will explore the State War Memorial precinct, the site of moving ceremonies every Anzac Day.
